Why Care

In a city that is home to more than three-quarters of a million people, there are only nine hospitals. Furthermore, health care is evolving quickly and many services that once needed a hospital are being done in less costly, more distributed outpatient settings, close to home. We must rise to the challenge of evolving our health care delivery system to meet 21st century needs.
The health care vision represented by California Pacific’s master plan is a major portion (30-40%) of the overall health care delivery system for the people of San Francisco.
GREAT HEALTH CARE
California Pacific Medical Center provides outstanding care – and a lot of it. For more than 150 years, through two major earthquakes, two World Wars and the deadliest flu epidemic ever, we have been taking care of patients in San Francisco, bringing the best medical care to every corner of our community. The presence of multiple specialists, technology, and services at the same site will enable less movement of patients within the hospital so that services will be delivered at the bedside.City wide, California Pacific…
… delivers 56% of San Francisco babies
… accounts for 33% of hospital discharges
… handles 32% of all Emergency Department visits
… is a regional referral center for highly-specialized medical care, drawing patients from all over California and the U.S.
… is one of only five medical centers in the U.S. to make the Leapfrog Top Hospital list for patient safety and quality for the past three years
… will build new facilities designed to be patient-centered and leading-edge with concentrations of clinical expertise for quality outcomes.
GREAT JOBS
California Pacific is the second largest private employer in San Francisco, with more than 6,600 employees who contribute to the City’s economy. The new facilities that we are planning to build will require 1,500 well-paid union construction jobs at a time when good jobs are in increasingly short supply.
California Pacific Medical Center 2008 statistics:
Active Physicians on Staff: 1,006
Employees: 6,921
Volunteers: 1,089
GREAT NEIGHBORHOODS
CPMC invests millions of dollars in community benefit. The new projects will:- Stimulate retail and residential development on the Van Ness corridor; it will bring in more customers for local businesses, generating income and jobs in the neighborhood.
- Create a vibrant community asset at St. Luke’s that will attract economic development and enhance the livability of the surrounding neighborhood.
SAFE HOSPITALS
There is an 80% chance of a damaging earthquake in the Bay Area in the next 30 years. The site at Van Ness & Geary offers the best combination of location, seismically appropriate soil, and accessibility for a new, state-of-the-art hospital that would allow us to provide care beyond a major seismic event. The new facility at St. Luke’s will provide needed support to San Francisco General Hospital in case of a disaster.
